NTR Foundation announces funding of key research appointment at the Mary Robinson Foundation
Posted on: June 28 2011
The NTR Foundation, the philanthropic organisation of NTR plc, is pleased to announce its support for a key post within the recently established Mary Robinson Foundation - Climate Justice, (MRFCJ) a non-profit organisation established by Mary Robinson, who returned to live and work in Ireland last year.
The NTR Foundation will provide initial funding for the post of Dr Tara Shine, Head of Research and Development. Dr Shine has worked as a technical adviser on environment, development and climate change issues for over 12 years. Much of her work has been carried out in developing countries resulting in an acute understanding of the issues and challenges faced by governments, research organisations and the non-governmental sectors in combating poverty, environmental degradation and climate change.
The research to be undertaken will be important in helping to inform the work of the NTR Foundation on issues such as; access to green technologies in low income countries and the necessary policy action required to support this; policy development and implementation at the international level; and finance mechanisms that support the transition to low carbon economies.
Announcing the funding, Tara Humphreys, Acting Director of the NTR Foundation said, “We are delighted to be supporting work that seeks to foster Irish and international leadership on issues of climate change and sustainable development. By working with the Mary Robinson Foundation we are looking to strengthen the impact of our own funding initiatives and support the policy drivers and priorities that can make a real difference on the climate change agenda. We are looking forward to working with Dr Shine and supporting the enhanced understanding of the issues and impacts of climate change globally.”
Bride Rosney, Acting CEO of MRFCJ said: “We are very pleased to receive support from the NTR Foundation at this early stage of our existence. It is particularly timely given that 2012 has been designated the UN Year for Sustainable Energy for All. The year will focus on scaling up access to clean affordable energy supplies to all and the combined approach of the two Foundations will support this UN objective.”

Dr Tara Shine has been actively involved in the climate change negotiations since 2003 as a member of the Irish, Dutch and Luxembourg delegations and as an EU negotiator on issues including capacity building, adaptation and finance. She is also a former member of the UNFCCC Consultative Group of Experts, the EU Expert Group on Adaptation and the Irish Impacts and Adaptation Steering Group.
The Mary Robinson Foundation - Climate Justice is a centre for thought leadership, education and advocacy on the struggle to secure global justice for those many victims of climate change who are usually forgotten – the poor, the disempowered and the marginalised across the world.
