Carbon Disclosure Project
The Carbon Disclosure Project is an independent not-for-profit organisation that launched in 2000 to collect and distribute information about the management and reduction of carbon emissions. This transparency and awareness about carbon emissions motivates investors, corporations and governments to take action to prevent dangerous climate change. Thousands of organisations from across the world’s major economies measure and disclose their green house gas emissions and climate change strategies through CDP.
The NTR Foundation is the principal sponsor of the Carbon Disclosure Project Ireland report 2010. The report was laucnhed on October 19th 2010 by Eamon Ryan, TD, Minister for Energy, Communications and Natural Resources. Yvo De Boer, former General Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change delivered the keynote address.
Coming to grips with climate change, coming to grips with issues around energy prices, energy security and sustainability, is basically a matter of self-interst, though also of course for Irish people, a matter for global citizens operating in a global market.Yvo De Boer, CDP 2010 Ireland Report
The CDP Ireland report 2010 outlines the activities of the Carbon Disclosure Project in Ireland over the past year. It includes detailed information about the greenhouse gas emissions from the top 40 ISEQ listed companies, as well as from the largest organisations in Ireland involved in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, other Irish companies and the largest inward investor in Ireland.
This is only the second year that Irish comopanies have participated in the Carbon Disclosure Project, thus it was encouraging that the overall response rate for 2010 was 58% out of 57 companies compared to only 33% of 43 businesses contacted in 2009. An equally encouraging 79% of respondents reported to have a Board committee or executive body with responsibility for climate change. In addition , the number of respondents with emission reduction actions in place increased from only 9 in 2009, to 27 in 2010.
The increased response rate suggests that climate change issues are now firmly established on corporate Boardroom agendas across Ireland. Executive Summary CDP 2010 Ireland Report
The Carbon Disclosure Project report is important in that it will allow Irish companies to set reduction targets in greenhouse gas emissions and measure performance improvement. Data from the Irish report will also be harmonised with data from over 2,500 organisations worldwide to help develop international carbon reporting standards.
